The Intimacy dress takes our notion personal space to a next level: the closer someone approaches, the more transparent the dress becomes. As such, the garment becomes a sort of second skin that allows the body to become an ‘interface’. As the interaction is similar to known interfacial body functions like blushing, one can anticipate the interaction to function on an intuitive level.

The dress is comprised of a flexible e-foil, which becomes transparent when slightly powered. The project is being developed by Studio Roosegaarde in collaboration with V2_ as an exploration of the relationship between intimacy and technology.

Over the last months we’ve seen plenty of smartphone apps that stimulate good behavior, for instance the new Nike+ GPS app. This is Puff, a caroon cloud-shape car accessory that is able to visualize the amount of pollution a car is producing. The cloud’s color changes dynamically, depending on CO2 emissions. Green indicates the lowest rate of pollution, red the highest. An accompanying iPhone app on the dashboard visualizes the drive data in real-time. The idea for Puff was developed by Amateur Human, an open platform for designing, showcasing and sharing playful design objects that accessorize our relationship to the environment.

“Puff is attached to the frame of the car or to the tail pipe. The lamp is light weight and thus well below the 50 pounds you can apparently safely hang from the exhaust pipe. The lamp itself is detachable, so you can take it inside with you whenever you leave your car at the curb. (…) The app also logs the drive data allowing you to keep track of various information such as how much total CO2 you’ve emitted during this trip or during all your trips with Puff, what is the average rate of emission, the total number of miles driven and the average MPG. It also estimates how much NOx, CO and hydrocarbons you’ve released into the environment.”

Puff shapes can be customized to fit individual styles. Unlike humans, birds cannot see transparent glass and they’re always in danger of flying towards such “open areas” at a high speed. So to reduce bird-strikes, glass specialists from Arnold Glas have invented a new type of glass that features reflective UV coating. Although practically transparent for humans, the UV reflective coating is clearly visible to birds and therefore helping them to avoid the obstacles.

Having noticed that people seldom walk straight through regular pedestrian crossings, Korean designer Jae Min Lim designed the ‘Ergo Crosswalk’ that features an arc shape to help the pedestrians take a much faster shortcut.

The following information is from the designer:

“When people cross roads, they tend to take the fastest shortcut. They sometimes do it intentionally, but mostly it is an unconscious act. This kind of action violates the traffic regulations and sometimes threatens the safety of the pedestrians. The ‘ergo crosswalk’ is a design that makes people follow the law, as well as consider their habits or unconscious actions. It will encourage pedestrians to follow the lines of the cross walk and protect them from any potential danger. If regulations cannot force people to follow the law, wouldn’t it be more reasonable to change the law and fulfill the main purpose of keeping the safety and convenience of the pedestrian?”
